Meaning of Sankat Mochan Hanuman Ashtak
The **Sankat Mochan Hanuman Ashtak** is a profound prayer that recounts various heroic deeds of Lord Hanuman, emphasizing his role as the "Remover of Troubles." Each verse highlights a specific instance where Hanuman fearlessly overcame immense challenges, bringing solace and victory.
- Doha (Beginning): This opening couplet describes how, in his childhood, Hanuman swallowed the sun, plunging all three worlds into darkness and terror. It emphasizes that this profound crisis could not be overcome by anyone else, highlighting Hanuman's unique power. The gods then pleaded with him, and he released the sun, ending their distress. This sets the stage for his reputation as a great remover of troubles.
- Verse 1: This verse recounts when Sugriva, due to fear from Bali, lived hidden on Rishyamukha mountain. Lord Rama was also on his path, looking for assistance. When the great sage Matanga cursed Bali, no one dared to approach. Hanuman, taking the form of a Brahmin, met Lord Rama and relieved Sugriva's sorrow. "Who in this world doesn't know your name, O Hanuman, the remover of troubles?"
- Verse 2: When Angad went with the Vaanar Sena to search for Sita, Sugriva warned them that if they returned without news of Sita, they wouldn't survive. When all became exhausted searching on the seashore, it was Hanuman who brought the news of Sita, saving their lives.
- Verse 3: When Ravana tormented Sita in Ashok Vatika and commanded the demonesses to alleviate her sorrow, it was then that Lord Hanuman arrived. He sought fire from Sita to burn Lanka and, by giving her Lord Rama's ring, relieved her immense sorrow.
- Verse 4: When Lakshmana was struck by Indrajit's Shakti (spear) in battle and was on the verge of losing his life, Ravana rejoiced. Hanuman went to Lanka, brought Sushena, the royal physician, and uprooted the entire Dronagiri mountain with the Sanjeevani herb. He brought the life-giving herb in time, saving Lakshmana's life.
- Verse 5: When Ravana performed an illusionary battle and bound Lord Rama and his entire army with Nagpash (serpent noose), causing them to fall unconscious, it was a great crisis. Then Hanuman brought Garuda (the king of birds, who is immune to snake venom), who freed them from the bondage and removed their fear.
- Verse 6: When Ahiravana abducted Lord Rama and Lakshmana to Patal Lok (the underworld) while they were sleeping, intending to sacrifice them to his deity. Hanuman went to Patal Lok, destroyed Ahiravana and his army, and rescued Rama and Lakshmana.
- Verse 7: You, the great brave Lord Hanuman, have performed mighty deeds for the gods. The devotee then asks, "What small trouble of mine, a humble being, cannot be removed by you? O Lord Hanuman, quickly remove whatever trouble I may have!" This verse is a direct appeal for help.
- Doha (Ending): This concluding couplet describes Lord Hanuman with a reddish body adorned with a red loincloth. He has a body like a thunderbolt, capable of crushing demons. "Victory, victory, victory to the brave monkey god!"
Regular recitation of the **Sankat Mochan Hanuman Ashtak** is believed to invoke Lord Hanuman's blessings, granting devotees strength to overcome adversity, protection from negative influences, and spiritual upliftment.
